From changing tables to bikes, strollers to princess dolls to clothing and toys - this sale has everything! Admission is free, although we always welcome donations to help fund current and future programs.

Interested in selling? Tables are $25.00 for a single, $50.00 for a double. Please e-mail scdckids@scdc.org to register for a table. Please include the size table you would like to reserve. We will e-mail you a registration form to complete and ask that you mail it back with payment. You will only be assigned a table once your signed registration form and payment is received.

Neighborhood Tour of SHARC (Shrewsbury Health and Racquet Club)

Please join us for our January Neighborhood Tour at SHARC. The tour will begin at 10am and will be about an hour. The children can try out the Under 10 Tennis while the Mom's learn about aquatics, youth programs and nutrition in our Tennis Hallway. The Hallway has large windows that overlook the tennis courts so you can keep an eye on your children. You will spend 30 minutes in the court/hallway while the children play tennis and other games to keep them entertained by one of the SHARC staff members. The younger children can stay with the mom's. After half an hour we will all move to the Birthday Party Hallway for craft time. Mom's can take a tour of the club if they like and enjoy craft time with the kids. Space is limited, so please register at

Join us for our first Neighborhood Tour of the season. On Friday, October 21st at 9:30a.m. at Tougas Farm in Northboro. The tour will include a wagon ride around the orchard, picking a small sugar pumpkin, coloring book and sticker, use of the Barnyard, Playground, and Picnic area, as well as a donut and cider snack. There is a fee of $6.25 per person (yes, adults as well). The tour will take appoximately 1-1/2 hours. We're in process of planning a Toy and Baby Gear Sale for Saturday, May 14th from 9:00 - 12:00. To make the sale a success, we need volunteers! Volunteers assist with set-up the evening before and to help during the sale. This is a great way to start volunteering and help the SCDC! Not only are you helping to put on a great event, but you will also get a sneak peek of all the items for sale.

We need volunteers Friday evening, from 6:00 - 8:00 and Saturday morning from 8:00 - 1:00. We can break that up into 1-2 hour increments.

Once we have enough volunteers to produce the sale, we'll be sending out registration information.

Sing and Swing - Registration Open

Registration for SCDC's Fall Sing and Swing begins today, October 19th. This fall we will have a seven week session of Sing and Swing beginning on November 3rd and ending December 22nd.

This 45-minute music program includes singing, dancing, instruments and a parachute. It is a rollicking fun time for children and parents.

What makes the SCDC work? Volunteers! People just like you and me who are wiling to help produce events and activities for families with young children. Join us to find out more about what the SCDC does, and how you can get involved.

At this meeting, we'll be planning our fall activities. We'll be talking about enrichment progams and seasonal events, including the Toy and Baby Gear Sale and a Halloween social. Also, we'll be talking about organizational roles. We need volunteers at all levels and with many interests. Please come and see how we can work together to make this the best year ever!

Planning for the Fall: Enrichment Programs

In years past, the SCDC's volunteers have produced a variety of
enrichment programs. These programs are structured activities designed
for specific age groups. They provide fun and interactive activities
for kids and also give parents an opportunity to meet, work together
and build lasting friendships.

Now is the time to plan this year's enrichment programs. Volunteers
make these programs happen. Without volunteers who are willing to
commit to organizing and running them, there won't be enrichment
programs.

There are 3 main roles for an enrichment program: Coordinator, Leader
and Assistant. The Coordinator arranges for the venue, organizes the
registrations, makes sure the class has the materials it needs. The
Leader is the "main teacher." The Leader interacts with everybody
during the class and keeps the group focused. The Assistant keeps the
class flowing by helping to lead, getting out materials and putting
them away, turning on and off the music, and so on.

These roles don't have to equal that same number of people. As
volunteers, you can work together to share these tasks however works
best for you. One person can do it all, or a couple people can work
together.

So, here are the million dollar questions: Do you want your kids to
experience Baby and Toddler Time, Sing and Swing, or a new enrichment
program this year? Will you volunteer to help produce it?

We're partnering with the Shrewsbury Public Library Children's Department to present a Mom & Baby Playgroup. This informal group gives moms an opportunity to meet other moms in a casual atmosphere. It's a great chance to get out of the house with your little one and socialize with other moms and their babies! (Older siblings are welcome to join us.)

The group will meet Mondays in June from 10:15 - 11:00 in the meeting room at the library. (Check our website calendar at www.SCDC.org for information on occasional Mondays when we will not be meeting.) No registration is required for this free drop-in playgroup. We hope to see you there!

Superintendent Saywer has planned a meeting for parents of incoming half-day kindergarten children on Wednesday, April 14th at 7:15 at Beal School. The sole topic of this meeting is the half-day schedule (morning vs. afternoon) for kindergarten children.
As parents of young children, we know how hard it can be to get out for one evening meeting, much less two nights in a row. So the SCDC program "I'm going to Kindergarten!" will be postponed until a date in May (to be determined). We will send an e-mail when we have a new date scheduled for this event.

Do you have a child going to kindergarten in the fall? Join the SCDC for a new event just for you. This event is a chance for children who are going to kindergarten – and their parents - to start to get to know each other.

For the kids, there will be fun activities and light refreshments. For the parents, there will be a casual environment where they can meet other parents with whom they will be sharing this "big kid school" adventure. Also, there will be parents who have kids in kindergarten at many of the schools in Shrewsbury who can speak informally about their experiences. Currently, we have parents from:

- Spring Street
- Saint Mary's
- Lilliput

Spring Sing & Swing session

Our spring session of our popular Sing & Swing music program will start the last week of March at Mt. Olivet Church (located at the corner of Prospect and Spring Streets). Registration is open Friday, March 18th - Wednesday, March 24th. This session will run for 6 weeks and costs $15 (additional siblings $5).

New! Toddler Sing & Swing! It's the same Sing & Swing music program now open to toddlers too! Our Wednesday 10:00 class is open to toddlers and preschoolers alike. Your toddler must be a fully secure and confident walker to participate.

You can register by filling out a form at the Shrewsbury Public Library (in the children's room). Or, send an email to scdckids@scdc.org. If registering by email, please include your name, phone number, child(ren)'s name(s) and age(s).If we do not have space for everyone, a lottery will be held for the class spaces. SCDC Enrichment Programs Mini-Session

Try out the SCDC's Enrichment Programs this winter! We're having a mini-session of our Sing & Swing and Baby & Toddler Time programs. The session will start the week of January 25th and will run for three weeks. The mini-session will cost just $5 per child. Registration is required as class size is limited.

Sing & Swing: This fun, energetic music introduction is geared for children 2-5 years old. We sing songs, dance and play instruments. Adult participation is key. Classes are held on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 10:00 - 10:45 at Mt. Olivet Church (located at the corner of Prospect and Spring Streets).

Baby & Toddler Time: Introduce your little ones to story time. This 30-minute class is for children birth to age 2½ with guardian. We tell stories, sing songs, do finger plays and have lots of fun. Class is held on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 at Mt. Olivet Church.

Would you like to guarantee your child a space in the class of your choice? Volunteers are needed to assist with both programs. Volunteers need to be available for a training session the week of January 18th and then must be available for the full three weeks of the mini-session. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Kathy Flynn at kathcf@townisp.com.

Registration for both programs is open Friday, January 15th through Tuesday, January 19th. You can register by filling out a form at the Shrewsbury Public Library (in the children's room). You are welcome to sign up for more than one enrichment program at the same time. Each enrichment program is $20.00. Siblings within the age range of the class are an additional $5.00. All other siblings are free.

Volunteer Open Houses - All Next Week

As a volunteer organization, the SCDC depends on people to make its programs work. Every year, the faces at our events change. New families move to town or hear about the SCDC for the first time. Old friends move on to grade school and leave us. We need new people to step forward and volunteer for the SCDC to keep going.

We have all sorts of volunteer opportunities available. Volunteer roles can be a couple minutes one time, or ongoing throughout the year. Whether you're able to staff an event, lead an enrichment program, help with publicity, or any number of other things - we need your participation.

We will be holding a series of Volunteer Open Houses in April. By having open houses on a variety of days and times, we hope to accommodate everyone’s varied schedules. Please come, ask questions, and see how we can work together to make the SCDC the best it can be.

Winter Enrichment Programs

Registration for the Winter Session will be held Friday, January 2nd through Wednesday, January 7th.

The SCDC is offering four exciting enrichment programs this Winter. These programs give parents and children a place to spend some quality time together.

Baby and Toddler Time
For children from birth to 2 and 1/2 years
Tuesday mornings, 9:30 am – 10:00 am

Sing and Swing
For children from 2 to 5 years
Two sessions available!
Wednesday mornings, 9:00 am – 9:45 am
Wednesday mornings, 10:00 am – 10:45 am

Arts and Crafts
For children from 3 to 5 years
Thursday mornings, 10:00 am – 10:45 am

Spanish for Children
For children from 3 to 5 years

To register via e-mail, please send the following information:

Your name
The names and ages of the children who will be attending
Your phone number
Your first choice program and day/time
Your second choice day/time, if applicable

In the event of too many registrations for a program, we may add another session at a different time and/or day of the week, or we may hold a lottery for slots.

Each enrichment program is $20.00. Siblings within the age range of the class are an additional $5.00. All other siblings are free.

Annual Toy and Baby Gear Sale

This annual sale is a giant indoor yard sale just for kid's stuff. There will be about 40 families selling their gently used children's items, so this is a great opportunity to buy some items at bargain prices. From strollers to winter boots, you can probably find what you're looking for at this fantastic event. Come early for best selection or come late for the biggest bargains - we hope to see you there!

The SCDC is pleased to be hosting a special craft workshop on Thursday September 25 from 4:00-5:30 p.m. at the Shrewsbury Health and Racquet Club, 3 Tennis Drive. We will be making animals and insects out of vegetables. Our creations may be entered in the Community Flower Show as part of the Spirit of Shrewsbury festival.

Pizza and drinks will be provided. A $2.00 donation is requested for each child. Space is limited, so please email us at scdckids@scdc.org if you would like to attend.

August Playdates

August is here and the summer is winding down, but we still have four more summer playdates to enjoy.

The August playdates are:

Wednesday, August 6th, 10:00: Spring Street School: We were rained out for this playground in July – maybe we’ll have better luck in August! This elementary school playground is located off of Spring Street, near Spring Terrace and the back entrance to Dean Park.

Wednesday, August 13th, 10:00: Coolidge School: In addition to the school playground, this location also provides access to a trail around Jordan Pond. It is located off of South Quinsigamond Ave at 1 Florence Street.

Wednesday, August 20th, 10:00: Floral Street School: This playground was a favorite from earlier in the summer – come play there again or check it out for the first time!

Wednesday, August 27th, 10:00: Edgemere Park: We’re finishing off our summer right where we started. For some of the families who attended our playdate here in June, this playground has become a new favorite destination. It is located on Edgemere Boulevard off of Route 20.

Summer Playdates for the rest of July

I'm sorry I'm a little behind the ball on this. Summer's a tough time for all of us to make plans. Here's the plans for the next two Summer Playdates. We at the SCDC are busy trying to shore up the rest of the summer's schedule ASAP.

Wednesday, July 23rd, 10:00: Spring Street School: Come discover another one of Shrewsbury elementary school's playgrounds. In addition to the fun playground structures, you can also bring bicycles, tricycles, and other ride-on toys to take advantage of the adjacent paved areas. Spring Street School is located off of Spring Street near Spring Terrace and the back entrance to Dean Park.

Wednesday, July 30th, 10:00: Lake Street Recreation Area: This park boasts a nearly-new paved trail that loops through the woods and is a perfect spot for bikes, trikes, and other ride-ons. Also added last spring are new picnic tables, so don't forget a snack. A quick walk further into the park brings you to town soccer fields where kids can fly kites, play frisbee, or just run around. Lake Street Recreation area is located on Lake Street south of Route 9 next to the SAC (Scandanavian Athletic Club). (Please note that there is not a playground at this park.)

This neighborhood park has a small playground, a playfield, and a basketball court. It is located off of Route 20 at the corner of Stoney Hill Road and Deer Run Drive. (Please note that the playground is set back behind some houses. At the corner you will see a paved trail leading to it.)

Wednesday, July 16th, 10:00: Greylock Park:

This less-known park has a playground, picnic tables, and walking/jogging trails. It is located off of North Quinsigamond Avenue; follow Philips Avenue to the end of Avon Avenue.

SCDC Summer Playdates: Getting to Know Shrewsbury's Parks & Playgrounds

Check out the variety of parks and playgrounds Shrewsbury has to offer at the SCDC's new summer playdates! Get the kids out of the house, meet some friends (new or old), and perhaps discover a new favorite spot in Shrewsbury. The playdates will be held every Wednesday morning starting at 10:00, and each week will be at a different location.

The first two playdates are:

Wednesday, June 25th, 10:00: Edgemere Park

Located on Edgemere Blvd off of Route 20, this park features a fun playground structure, swings, a seesaw, and large fields perfect for flying kites or playing ball.*

Wednesday, July 2nd, 10:00: Floral Street School

This elementary school boasts a large playground structure with bridges, tunnels, slides, and more. Next to it is a paved area where the little ones can ride tricycles or ride-on toys*. For the more adventurous, there are some paths in the woods behind the school to explore.

* Please note that if you wish to fly kites, play ball, or use ride-on toys or tricycles, you will need to bring your own.

This is not officially an SCDC event, but it could be a lot of fun.

Neighborhood Tour: SELCO Peaking Plant

SELCO Peaking Plant Open House

Come tour the SELCO Peaking Plant on Saturday June 7th from 9:00 to 11:00am. Learn how SELCO uses this small-scale diesel generation plant to help save money during times of peak electric demand.

Visitors will get a brief history of the plant and see their five locomotive engine generators in person. SELCO bucket and pole auger trucks will also be available for visitors of all ages to explore.

This is not an SCDC event, it's open to the general public. NO RESERVATIONS NECESSARY.

Directions: The plant is on Rt. 9 next to Home Depot. Visitors must access the plant through the Home Depot parking lot. Follow the signs and park at the rear right-hand corner of the lot (near the lumber entrance of Home Depot).

Neighborhood Tour: Shampoo Salon

The next neighborhood tour will take place on Thursday, June 12 from 10:00-11:45 a.m. at Shampoo Salon, 308 Boston Turnpike Road.

This is an opportunity to have the little ones become comfortable with the idea of having their hair cut. Along with that, moms, dads, and caregivers can experience a bit of pampering.

Pizza, refreshments, and kid-friendly activities will be provided.
